NEW MEXICO ANNUAL CROP PRODUCTION


NEW MEXICO: Corn for Grain production is estimated at 10.44 million bushels for 2004, up 21percent from 2003. Harvested acreage was up 10,000 acres at 58,000. The average yield remained at 180 bushels per acre. Corn for Silage harvested acreage dropped to 66,000 acres in 2004. Many operations were switching to new varieties of sorghum silage that produce higher yields with less water. Production totaled 1.65 million tons. Sorghum for Grain acres harvested increased to 92,000 acres, compared to 62,000 the year before. Average yield increased to 46 bushels per acre for a total production of 4.23 million bushels, compared to only 1.67 million bushels in 2003. Sorghum for Silage now sits at 35,000 harvested acres, up 25,000 acres from the year before. Production totaled 595,000 tons. Winter Wheat production is estimated at 7.8 million bushels, 86 percent above 2003. Alfalfa hay production totaled 1,176,000 tons from 240,000 acres. Other hay production totaled 189,000 tons from 90,000 acres. Upland cotton harvested acreage was up to 64,000 acres, compared to 38,000 in 2003. Production totaled 125,000 bales. American-Pima cotton acreage also increased in 2004, to 10,500 acres harvested. Production was estimated at 20,000 bales. Peanut harvested acres remained unchanged at 17,000, with a total production of 59.5 million pounds. Yields averaged 3,500 pounds an acre, up from 2003's 2,700 pounds an acre. Potato acreage dropped to 5,000 harvested. Pinto Beans were down to 6,000 acres harvested.

GRAIN STOCKS

Corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2004 totaled 9.45 billion bushels, up 19 percent from December 1, 2003. This is the highest December 1 stocks level since 1987. Of the total stocks, 6.14 billion bushels are stored on farms, up 16 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 3.30 billion bushels, are up 24 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2004 indicated disappearance is 3.32 billion bushels, compared with 3.22 billion bushels during the same period last year.

All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2004 totaled 1.43 billion bushels, down 6 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 531 million bushels, up 8 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at 900 million bushels, are down 13 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2004 indicated disappearance is 508 million bushels, down 2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Grain sorghum stored in all positions on December 1, 2004 totaled 282 million bushels, up 19 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 78.7 million bushels, are up 74 percent from December 1 last year. Off-farm stocks, at 203 million bushels, are up 7 percent from a year earlier. The September - November 2004 indicated disappearance from all positions is 207 million bushels, down 5 percent from the same period in 2003.
