Because of its large size, there is a large difference in the weather and plants across the state. Rainfall ranges from only 8 inches in Southern New Mexico to 40 inches in the mountains of Northern New Mexico.

New Mexico Mountain Range

Northwestern New Mexico is a mixture of mountain meadows and dry waste lands. Crops grown in this area are irrigated and the pastures are watered by rainfall. More than 45% of New Mexico is owned by State and Federal Governments.

Southwestern New Mexico is considered to be part of the Chihuahuan Desert and the area is dry and can be very hot. Crops grown in this area of the State depend upon irrigation waters for growth. Pastures have little grass for cattle to eat and rainfall is needed for the grasses to grow. Southwestern NM Chihuahuan Desert

Southeastern New Mexico is part of the plains portion of the United States. Pasture grasses grow whenever rain falls and crops are irrigated to make them grow.
