started with the American Indians living in the state. In addition to hunting animals for a meat supply, crops were grown for food, clothing, and medicine.

Many of the

crops

grown by the early American Indians in New Mexico are still grown today. These include corn, squash, pumpkins, onions, potatoes, and cotton.

Agriculture: The production of crops, livestock or poultry.

When the explorers

and settlers came to New Mexico in the 1500's, many new crops were brought into the state. These new crops were alfalfa, wheat, fruit trees, grapes, chile, melons, and beans. These crops are also still grown in New Mexico today.

Cattle, sheep,

goats, hogs,

and horses were also introduced into New Mexico by the Spanish explorers. Today all of these animals are still raised in the state.
