sc-crop-weather State South Carolina Crop Weather Release Date, Week Ending Date Week Ending April 3, 2005 Issue SC-CW1405 Agricultural Summary A wet start to the growing season has caused some delays in planting across the State. Heavy winds over the past weekend caused downed trees and possibly some damage to early planted crops especially in the lower part of the State. Soil moisture was 60% adequate and 40% surplus. There were 3.4 days suitable for field work. Field Crops Report CORN was in fair to mostly good condition with planting at 33% overall with 11% of the crop emerged. No COTTON and only a small amount of SORGHUM were reported planted at week's end. TOBACCO planting was also underway. Fruits, Vegetables and Specialty Crops Report CANTALOUPE planting was 25% complete and WATERMELON planting was 35% complete at the end of the week. Both melon crops were in fair condition. CUCUMBER planting was 30% complete and SNAP BEAN planting was 25% complete. Almost one-third of the TOMATO crop was planted and was in mostly fair to good shape. APPLE and PEACH trees were in fair to excellent condition overall with apple condition somewhat better than peaches. Small Grains, Pastures and Livestock Report LIVESTOCK were in fair to mostly good condition as were PASTURES due to the abundance of rain across the area. All SMALL GRAINS were in mostly good condition and were in the process of heading.
