sc-crop-weather State South Carolina Crop Weather Release Date, Week Ending Date Week Ending April 10, 2005 Issue SC-CW1406 Agricultural Summary Continuing wet weather hindered planting in many areas of the State. Some fields in Charleston county experienced flooding, and in Colleton county, high winds and blowing sand caused damage to watermelons and newly emerged corn. Many growers were also concerned about potential disease problems in small grains due to such wet condition. Soil moisture was 3% short, 64% adequate and 33% surplus. There were 4.3 days suitable for field work. Field Crops Report One percent of the State's SOYBEANS had been planted by the end of the week. CORN was in fair to mostly good condition with planting at 51% with 26% of the crop emerged. One percent of the COTTON crop and 7% of the SORGHUM crop were reported planted at week's end. TOBACCO transplanting was 12% complete. Fruit, Vegetables and Specialty Crops Report CANTALOUPE planting was 35% complete and WATERMELON planting was 42% complete at the end of the week with both crops in mostly fair condition. CUCUMBER planting was 45% complete and SNAP BEAN planting was 40% complete with both crops in good condition. About one-half of the TOMATO crop was planted and was in fair to good shape. PEACH trees were in mostly good condition, while APPLE trees were in fair to excellent condition overall. Small Grains, Pastures and Livestock Report LIVESTOCK were in fair to mostly good condition as were PASTURES due to abundant soil moisture across the area. All SMALL GRAINS were in mostly good condition and 9 percent of WINTER WHEAT, 10% of BARLEY, 33% of RYE, and 20% of OATS had headed by week's end. Spring season flowering, east of the foothills, was beginning to peak. Cloudy skies and showers began on Thursday and continued Friday. Sites across the north midlands reported thunderstorms and heavy rains within the unstable air mass. Clearing skies were observed on Saturday followed by mild, mid-70 degree conditions on Sunday. For the period, the State average temperature was three degrees above normal. The highest official temperature reported was 87 degrees at Cades and Orangeburg on April 5. The lowest official temperature reported was 37 degrees at Walhalla and Union on the morning of April 4. The heaviest 24-hour rainfall reported was 3.57 inches at Cheraw ending at 7:00 a.m. on April 9. The average Statewide rainfall for the period was 0.8 inches. SOIL: 4 inch depth average soil temperature: Columbia 66 degrees. RIVERS AND SURF: South Carolina river stages were near to above normal. Surf temperatures at Myrtle Beach and Savannah will average around 64 degrees.
