sc-crop-weather State South Carolina Crop Weather Release Date, Week Ending Date Week Ending November 6, 2005 Issue SC-CW1437 Agricultural Summary Dry, sunny weather was ideal for farmers harvesting field crops last week. No measurable precipitation has fallen statewide for nearly a month now. Producers were busy preparing for small grain seeding with high hopes that the week ahead would bring some moisture. No crop or disease damage was reported last week. Soil moisture was 7% very short, 42% short and 51% adequate. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Field Crops Report Nearly the state’s entire SOYBEAN crop had turned color by week’s end and 31 percent had been harvested with crop condition dropping slightly last week. Yield reports have been all over the board. COTTON bolls were nearly all opened and harvest was over half way through at 61 percent harvested, 5 percent ahead of the 5 year average. SORGHUM had reached maturity and was 92 percent harvested last week. PEANUT harvest moved at a rapid pace as 95 percent was harvested at the end of the week. Fruits, Vegetables and Specialty Crops Report APPLE harvesting was 95 percent completed. PECAN harvesting was 45 percent completed at week=s end with no change in crop condition. Livestock, Pastures and Small Grains Report LIVESTOCK and PASTURE condition slipped last week with the lack of precipitation. Small grain seeding still lagged behind normal with 37 percent of WINTER WHEAT, 45 percent of RYE, 48 percent of OATS, and 55 percent of BARLEY seeded. WINTER GRAZINGS were in mostly good condition. Much was the case this past Monday through Sunday with dry, sunny days. Raindrops did fall across the Pee Dee on Tuesday and again across western counties early Sunday but amounts were of little consequence. Following the previous week’s morning freeze and frost observations, warm, near 80 degree afternoons provided for a period of Autumn Indian Summer. For the period, the state average temperature was two degrees above normal. The highest official temperature reported was 82 degrees at Pageland, Pritchardville, Ft. Moultrie, and Sandhill on November 6. The lowest official temperature reported was 28 degrees at Cheraw on the morning of October 31. The heaviest official 24-hour rainfall reported was 0.02 inches at Kingstree ending at 7:00 a.m. on November 1. The average statewide rainfall for the period was 0.0 inches. SOIL: 4-inch depth average soil temperature: Columbia 68 degrees. RIVERS AND SURF: South Carolina river stages were below normal. Surf temperatures at Myrtle Beach and Savannah will average around 66 degrees.
