sc-crop-weather State South Carolina Crop Weather Release Date, Week Ending Date Week Ending November 7, 2004 Issue SC-CW1434 Agricultural Summary The week began with warm temperatures and mostly clear skies. There were some scattered showers throughout the state during the middle of the week. The week ended with clear skies and cooler temperatures. Lack of soil moisture has stalled small grain planting in some of the dryer counties. Overall soil moisture was 2% very short, 12% short, 84% adequate, and 2% surplus. There were 5.8 days suitable for field work. Field Crops Report COTTON condition was mostly good with nearly two-thirds of the crop harvested. PEANUT harvesting was 91 percent completed with the crop remaining in fair to mostly good condition. SOYBEANS were 65 percent matured and 29 percent harvested while the crop remained in mostly good condition. SORGHUM remained in mostly good condition with harvesting at 92 percent complete. All TOBACCO stalks had been destroyed by the end of last week. SWEET POTATO conditions remained unchanged from the previous week with harvesting nearing completion. Fruits, Vegetables and Specialty Crops Report APPLE harvesting was winding down and should be completed by week's end. PECAN harvesting was 42 percent completed. Small Grains, Pasture and Livestock Report All SMALL GRAIN crops were in fair to mostly good condition for the week. WINTER WHEAT planting was halfway complete and crop emergence was ahead of its normal rate. Three-forths of the BARLEY planting was complete with 58 percent of the crop emerged. Both OAT and RYE planting were 69 percent completed with half of the crops emerged. PASTURES and LIVESTOCK remained in mostly good condition for the week. WINTER GRAZINGS planting remained ahead of its normal rate with the crop in mostly good condition. Widely scattered showers were reported on Tuesday and Wednesday with a line of showers occurring as the cold front pushed through the state on Thursday. By the end of the week, cold, dry, high pressure brought plenty of sunshine and below normal temperatures. This air mass combined with light winds produced the coldest morning of the season on Saturday with temperatures in the 30s. For the period, the state average temperature was six degrees above normal. The highest official temperature reported was 87 degrees at Givhans on November 1. The lowest official temperature reported was 31 degrees at Long Creek on the morning of November 6. The heaviest official 24-hour rainfall reported was 2.47" at Table Rock ending at 7:00 a.m. on November 3. The average statewide rainfall for the period was 0.5." SOIL: 4 inch depth average soil temperature: Columbia 69 degrees. RIVERS AND SURF: South Carolina river stages were near normal. Surf temperatures at Myrtle Beach and Savannah will average around 69 degrees.
