SOUTH CAROLINA LIVESTOCK OPERATION NUMBERS DOWN

Columbia, S.C., February 2, 2005:The number of operations in SOUTH CAROLINA in 2004 with cattle and calves totaled 10,000, down 200 from 2003 and down 500 from 2002, the USDA NASS South Carolina Statistical Service announced today. Beef cow operations are estimated at 9,000, down 200 from 2003 and down 500 from 2002. Milk cow operations are estimated at 200, down 10 from 2003 and down 20 from 2002. Hog operations are estimated at 900 in 2004, unchanged from 2003 and 2002.

1/ An operation is any place having one or more head of cattle, beef cows, milk cows (excluding cows used to nurse calves), hogs or pigs on hand at any time during the year. 2/ Preliminary.

 

The number of operations with cattle in the UNITED STATES totaled 989,460 during 2004, down 2 percent from 2003 and 5 percent below 2002. Beef cow operations in 2004 were down 2 percent from 2003 and 4 percent below 2002. Milk cow operations were 6 percent below last year and 11 percent below two years ago. The number of operations with hogs totaled 69,420 during 2004, down 6 percent from 2003 and 9 percent from 2002. Places with 2,000 or more head accounted for 79 percent of the inventory.
