Off-farm employment
and income is extremely important to South Carolina farm families as 53.6
percent of our farm operators considered something other than farming as
their principal occupation. Female principal farm operators accounted for
14.3 percent of all operators. Black or African American farm operators
accounted for 7.9 percent of all operators. The average age of all farmers
was 56.9 years.
