Return to the List of 2000 Crop Weather Reports

Released: May 1, 2000 -- 3:00 p.m For Week Ending April 30, 2000 Volume 49 Issue 9

GENERAL:    Easter Monday saw a flurry of intense field and livestock activity before rains moved in, slowing field work across most of the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Southeastern counties were dry enough for seeding corn and soybeans. Major activities by farmers and ranchers were working on machinery, fertilizing and spraying fields, tillage, planting small grains, working cattle and calves, and fencing. Statewide, there were 4.1 days suitable for field work. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

SOIL CONDITIONS: Warmer, moister soils will provide farmers with excellent seed beds and speed up emer gence. Topsoil moisture, as of Sunday, was rated 77 percent adequate or surplus, with short and very short decreasing by 3 percentage points.

CROPS:    Wet soils slowed planting last week while in the drier southeast corn seeding got underway in earnest. Seeding of small grains made good progress with spring wheat, barley, and oats jumping 11, 25, and 12 percentage points, respectively. All are ahead of last year and the five-year average rate of seeding. Emergence of small grains was enhanced by favorable temperatures and soil moisture. Corn planting advanced significantly, with 24 percent of the acreage now seeded, compared to 5 percent a year ago. Farmers are reporting problems with both army and pale western cutworms.

Recent precipitation has replenished stock dams, with 91 percent rated at adequate or surplus. Movement of cattle to pastures jumped to 19 percent completed by week's end. Cattle and calves were in mostly good to excellent condition. Calving is 81 percent complete. Lambing is 83 percent complete.

WEATHER:    Statewide, temperatures ranged from 2 degrees below normal at Newell to 8 degrees above normal at Faulkton. Average temperatures ranged from 44 degrees at Custer to 57 degrees at several stations. The lowest temperature, 27 degrees, was recorded at Custer. Yankton, at 80 degrees, was the warmest. Precipitation in the forms of rain, hail, and snow was reported. All stations reported precipitation, with western counties receiving the most. Most of the southeast remains drier than normal.
