Return to the List of 2000 Crop Weather Reports

Released: May 30, 2000 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending May 28, 2000 Volume 49 Issue 13

GENERAL:    Light rain fell again last week across most of the state, maintaining moisture supplies for crop development, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Rains during the week slowed some fieldwork, while helping crop progress. Major activities by farmers and ranchers were planting row crops, spraying crops, working calves, and moving cattle to pasture. Statewide, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

SOIL CONDITIONS:    Topsoil moisture decreased slightly from the prior week, with 13 percent of the state reporting short or very short, while areas report ing surplus moisture decreased by 5 percent. Subsoil moisture conditions declined across the state, with 24 percent of the state rated short or very short, com pared to 18 percent last week.

CROPS:    Timely rains, favorable temperatures and sufficient soil moisture, are pushing seeding and crop progress. Several reports indicate crops will recover from last week's hail damage. Seeding of small grains is virtually complete, while corn planted increased 4 percentage points to 97 percent. Corn emerged, at 81 percent, is 45 percentage points ahead of last year. Soybeans planted increased by 23 percentage points to 86 percent completed, 42 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Sorghum and sunflower planted, at 49 and 41 percent, are both well ahead of last year and the five-year averages.
