Return to the List of 2000 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 12, 2000 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending June 11, 2000 Volume 49 Issue 15

GENERAL:    The hot, windy weather which covered the state last week lowered soil moisture, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The hot weather helped crop development and allowed farmers to work in the fields. Major activities by farmers and ranchers were spraying, cutting alfalfa, and cultivating. Statewide, there were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

SOIL CONDITIONS:    Topsoil moisture conditions declined from last week, as areas reporting short or very short jumped 14 percentage points, but 76 percent of the state is still rated as having adequate or surplus topsoil moisture. Subsoil moisture levels declined slightly. Areas reporting short or very short subsoil moisture increased 4 percentage points from last week.

CROPS:    Warm weather during last week accelerated crop growth. Winter wheat and rye are 87 percent headed, well beyond the five-year average. Spring wheat, oats, and barley development are also ahead of average. The corn crop is now 98 percent emerged, while the average corn height, at 9 inches, is 3 inches over last week's mark. Planting of soybeans, at 98 percent, is almost complete,. Sunflower increased to 84 percent planted, and sorghum is now 75 percent planted. Reports of weeds are common, as the windy conditions made spraying difficult.
