Return to the List of 2000 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 19, 2000 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending June 18, 2000 Volume 49 Issue 16

GENERAL:    Crop development did not slow as below normal temperatures covered the region last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statis tics Service. The cool weather helped hold in soil moisture and crop growth continued to progress. Major activities by farmers and ranchers were spraying, cutting alfalfa, and cultivating. Statewide, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

SOIL CONDITIONS:    Soil conditions increased slightly from last week. Areas reporting short or very short topsoil moisture decreased by 7 percentage points. Subsoil moisture levels were mostly unchanged from last week's report.

CROPS:    Cool temperatures and lack of sunshine over the past week did not slow crop development. Weeds became an increasing problem because, once again, windy conditions covered the state and did not allow for much spraying. Small grains are in favorable condition, as winter wheat and rye are mostly headed and now turning color, both ahead of a year ago. Spring wheat jumped to 58 percent headed, oats increased to 49 percent, and barley is now 53 percent headed. Temperatures did not slow corn growth, as average corn height is now 15 inches, up 6 inches from last week. Soybeans are now 97 percent emerged, compared to 78 percent last year.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE:    Livestock continue to be reported in good condition. The weather has put little stress on livestock, and pastures are in good condition. First cutting of alfalfa continues throughout the state. The cool, damp weather during the week slowed cutting for some farmers. First cutting is now 71 percent complete and regrowth for the second cutting is now a concern, as first cutting had low quality and tonnage. Harvesting of other hay is now 21 percent complete.

WEATHER:    Cool temperatures and small amounts of precipitation were common across the state during the past week. Temperatures ranged from 2 to 9 degrees below normal. Highs for the week reached the upper eighties in many areas and included two ninety degree readings. The highest amount of precipitation, 1.97 inches, was reported in Timber Lake and the lowest amount, 0.06 inch, was reported in Hot Springs.
