Return to the List of 2000 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 26, 2000 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending June 25, 2000 Volume 49 Issue 17

GENERAL:    Moderate temperatures, scattered show- ers, and strong winds covered the state last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statis tics Service. Soil moisture is a concern, as windy conditions lowered moisture levels. Major activities by farmers and ranchers were spraying, cutting alfalfa, cultivating, and caring for livestock. Statewide, there were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

SOIL CONDITIONS:    Adequate soil moisture conditions exist across most of the state. Areas reporting short or very short topsoil moisture increased by 4 percent age points from last week, and areas reporting short or very short subsoil moisture increased by 2 percentage points.

CROPS:    The moderate temperatures and scattered showers during last week helped crop development. Corn is now averaging 20 inches, up 5 inches from last week. Soybeans are 99 percent emerged, but cool temperatures have slowed growth. Small grain development is well ahead of last year and the five-year average. Winter rye turning color is 33 percent complete. Winter wheat turning color, at 49 percent complete, is 32 percentage points ahead of the five- year average. Oats at 73 percent headed, spring wheat at 80 percent, and barley at 78 percent headed are all progressing well. Sorghum and sunflower are now 99 percent planted. All crops are mostly in fair to excellent condition, with some reports of disease in winter wheat.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE:    Livestock and pasture are in good condition, but lack of moisture in some areas has producers concerned. Water supplies, at 77 percent adequate, vary throughout the state, with some reports of producers having to haul water to their livestock. As the first cutting of alfalfa continues, warm weather and rain showers are needed to stimulate growth for a second cutting. First cutting is now 85 percent complete and harvesting of other hay is 35 percent complete.

WEATHER:    Temperatures were normal across the state last week. A high of 97 degrees was reported in Porcupine, and a low of 40 degrees was reported in Hot Springs. Scattered precipitation was also common, as Aberdeen reported 2.98 inches of rain and Buffalo reported on 0.07 inch of rain.
