SD-CW4200 Volume 49 Issue 42 (Issue # changed from 34 to 42 to convert to national standard)
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Scattered, light rains
didn't slow row crop harvest and did little to help
livestock or winter crops, according to USDA's South
Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major activities
by farmers were combining soybeans, corn, and
sunflower and hauling grain. Ranchers were busy
keeping cattle fed and watered, moving them to
stubble, and weaning calves. Statewide, there were
6.5 days suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Temperatures last week
ranged from 7 to 13 degrees above normal, with the
high of 90 degrees at Pierre. Custer was the only
station not reaching a high of at least 80 degrees.
Nineteen stations reported precipitation, two with over
half an inch. The greatest accumulations were in the
southeast.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil tillage is difficult due to dry conditions. Topsoil moisture rated short or very short declined by 8 percentage points over last week, despite showers. Areas with subsoil moisture rated short or very short worsened by 7 points. Soil temperatures reported averaged 3.9 degrees warmer than average.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Dry weather has row crop harvest far ahead of average, with soybeans nearly complete and corn and sunflower in full swing. Soy beans, at 94 percent harvested, are 13 percentage points ahead of the five-year average and 14 points over last year. Corn harvest jumped 19 points to 65 percent complete and is 26 points ahead of the five- year average and last year. Sunflower harvested, at 83 percent complete, is a whopping 41 points ahead of last year. Winter wheat seeded advanced 11 percent age points to 90 percent complete. Due to dry condi tions, winter wheat emergence is 31 percentage points behind the average for late October.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Ranchers are responding to depleted pastures and scarce water by weaning calves early, moving cattle to stubble, and trying to get water to cattle. There were several reports of water and dust problems. Water supplies are rated 31 percent very short, 27 percent short, only 41 percent adequate, and 1 percent sur plus. Range and pasture rated 46 percent in very poor to poor condition, compared to 37 percent last week. Feed supplies are rated 75 percent adequate to surplus, unchanged from last week. Cattle and sheep rated 79 and 78 percent in good to excellent condition, respectively.
