For Week Ending April 22, 2001
SD-CW1501 Volume 50 Issue 16
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: The first part of the
week brought warmer temperatures and windy, drying
conditions; but by week's end, colder temperatures,
rain, sleet, and, in some areas, snow brought fieldwork
to a halt, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricul
tural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included
mending fences damaged from heavy snow drifts,
preparing farm machinery for spring planting, fertilizing
fields, and calving. Statewide, there were 1.2 days
reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors, and other
reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Average temperatures ranged
from a high of 50 degrees in Vermillion to a low of 39
degrees in Roscoe, with a statewide average of 44.4
degrees, 4 degrees below normal. Precipitation fell
across most of the state, ranging from a trace in some
areas to 3.9 inches in the southeast. April precipitation
for the state is 1.48 inches above normal, while the
growing degree days are 11.2 below normal.
SOIL CONDITION: Lowland flooding and cool soil temperatures continue to delay planting intentions. A few reports of spring tilling and fertilizing were noted earlier in the week. Soil temperatures from reporting stations averaged 43.3 degrees, compared to 42.1 degrees last week. Topsoil moisture was reported as 59 percent adequate, with 41 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 34 percent surplus, 59 percent adequate, and 7 percent short.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Just as conditions appeared to be suitable for spring planting, additional precipitation thwarted producers progress. A few reported planting activity in sandy type soils early in the week. Winter wheat condition is reported as 60 percent fair to excellent, compared to 70 percent last week. Winter wheat booted is reported at 7 percent. Spring wheat planted is estimated at 5 percent versus 71 percent a year ago and 36 percent for a five-year average. If cool, wet weather continues, acres intended for small grains may be planted to row crops.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Calving and lambing continues, with 67 percent of the calving and 79 percent of the lambing complete. Calf death loss is 15 percent above average and 85 percent average to below average, while cattle were rated 97 percent in fair to excellent condition, with 3 percent rated in poor condition. Sheep were rated at 68 percent in good to excellent condition and 32 percent poor to fair. Feed supplies are rated 5 percent very short, 24 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are reported as 100 percent adequate or surplus. With hay stocks quickly dwindling, producers are anxiously waiting for pastures to green up and allow them to turn cattle out to graze.
