Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: May 14, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending May 13, 2001 SD-CW1801 Volume 50 Issue 19

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Strong winds dried out fields adequately, allowing spring planting to progress, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statis tics Service. Major farm activities included planting small grains and row crops, fertilizing and tilling fields, fixing fences, and turning cow/calf pairs out to pasture. Statewide, there were 3.3 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Rain followed by wind seems to be the recurring pattern this month. Temperatures ranged from a high of 95 degrees in Long Valley to a low of 29 degrees in Hot Springs and Porcupine, with a statewide average of 58 degrees, 3 degrees above normal. Precipitation totals averaged 0.37 inch for the week ending May 13. Since the first of the year, we have received a statewide average of 7.3 inches of precipitation, which is 1.9 inches above normal.

SOIL CONDITION:    Rain and strong winds have caused crusting in some areas and ponding in others. Soil temperatures warmed to an average of 56.5 degrees. Topsoil moisture was reported as 62 percent adequate, 34 percent surplus, and 4 percent short. Subsoil moisture was rated as 33 percent surplus, 60 percent adequate, 5 percent short, and 2 percent very short.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Windy, drying conditions allowed spring planting to progress, with 69 percent of spring wheat, 70 percent of barley, and 70 percent of the oats now seeded. Row crop planting slowly continues, with 22 percent of the corn and 3 percent of the soybeans planted. Corn and soybean acres planted are 25 and 11 percentage points behind the five-year averages, respectively. Winter wheat condi tion is now reported as 43 percent fair to excellent and 57 percent poor to very poor, down slightly from last week. In contrast to winter wheat, spring wheat is rated 94 percent fair to excellent, and barley and oats are reported as 100 percent fair to excellent.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Cattle continue to slowly move out of feed lots, as pastures gradually improve. Range and pasture condition is rated at 94 percent fair to excellent, compared to 88 percent last week. Calving and lambing are nearly complete, with 89 percent of the calving and 91 percent of the lambing done. Cattle were rated 82 percent in good to excellent condition, with only 18 percent rated in fair to poor condition. Sheep were rated at 81 percent in good to excellent condition and 19 percent fair to poor. Feed supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 20 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are plentiful, with 98 percent rated as adequate or surplus.
