Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: May 29, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending May 27, 2001 SD-CW1801 Volume 50 Issue 21

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Unseasonably cold, windy conditions slowed planting progress last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included planting row crops, spraying for weeds, mending fences, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 4.9 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Cool, windy conditions and a few areas of frost interrupted fieldwork progress. Temperatures ranged from 84 degrees in Milesville and Winner to a low of 28 degrees in Hot Springs. Precipitation at reporting stations last week varied from none to 1.28 inches in Centerville. Several areas in the state are reporting a need for additional moisture, and nearly the entire state is requesting warmer temperatures and sunshine.

SOIL CONDITION:    A dry, windy week dried out topsoil moisture, as areas now reporting topsoil moisture as short increased 4 percentage points to 10 percent, with 19 percent surplus, 68 percent adequate, and 3 percent very short. Soil temperatures averaged 56.1 degrees, down from 62.6 degrees last week. Subsoil moisture was rated as 20 percent surplus, 70 percent adequate, 8 percent short, and 2 percent very short.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Scattered, light frost slowed crop progress, and windy conditions continue to interfere with herbicide application. Where conditions were suitable, corn and soybean planting continued last week, with 87 percent of the corn crop in and 50 percent of soybeans done. Early corn condition is rated slightly below last year, while soybeans are slightly above, even though planting progress is behind the five-year average. With nearly all the small grains planted, spring wheat is rated as 70 percent good to excellent, barley 67 percent good to excellent, and oats 69 percent good to excellent. Sorghum and sunflower planting is underway, with 32 percent of the sorghum and 17 percent of the sunflower sown.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Cattle continue to be in good health, as 99 percent are in fair to excellent condition. Range and pasture condition is rated at 89 percent in fair to excellent condition. Moving cow/calf pairs to pasture continues, with 84 percent in pasture. Sheep condition remained almost unchanged from last week, with 18 percent excellent, 69 percent good, and 13 percent fair. Feed supplies improved slightly with 7 percent surplus, 73 percent adequate, 12 percent short, and 8 percent very short.
