Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 4, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending June 3, 2001 SD-CW2201 Volume 50 Issue 22

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Cool weather, along with scattered showers, slowed fieldwork again last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included planting row crops, spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 4.5 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  A Cool temperatures and rain were reported throughout the state last week. High temperatures ranged mostly from the upper 70's to the lower 80's and lows were from the lower 40's to the upper 30's, with Porcupine reporting a low of 31 degrees. Varying amounts of precipitation fell across the state as Brookings received only 0.17 inch of rain and Buffalo received 2.83 inches. Although precipitation is still needed in parts of the state, many farmers are requesting sunny skies and warmer tempertures to aid crop development.

SOIL CONDITION:    With the cool rainy weather, topsoil conditions improved slightly from last week. Topsoil conditions for the state were 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition remained relatively unchanged from last week.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Cool temperatures have slowed crop development compared to previous years but planting of row crops continues. Corn planting nears completion with 95 percent seeded and 74 percent emerged. The average height of corn, at 3 inches, is the same as the five-year average but 3 inches behind last year's height. Soybean planting continues with 77 percent seeded and 35 percent emerged. Sorghum and sunflower are 35 and 39 percent seeded, respectively. Winter rye and winter wheat are well behind last year's headed mark. Only 5 percent of winter rye is headed compared to 61 percent last year, and 4 percent of winter wheat is headed compared to 64 percent last year.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Livestock continue mostly in good to excellent condition this week. Cool weather has kept flies at a minimum and there are adequate feed and stock water supplies. Range and pasture are 93 percent in fair to excellent condition. Cow/calf pairs moved to pasture nears completion with 92 percent moved. Cattle are rated 79 percent in good to excellent condition and sheep 83 percent in good to excellent condition. Harvesting of hay has begun with 10 percent of the alfalfa cut.
