Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 11, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending June 10, 2001 SD-CW2301 Volume 50 Issue 23

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Although crop development remains behind previous years, sunshine during the week gave crops a much-needed boost, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included planting row crops, spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 4.5 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  A Scattered severe weather, below normal temperatures, and varying amounts of precipitation covered most of the state last week. Highs for the week were in the 80's, with a high of 92 degrees reported in Philip. Lows during the week ranged from 40 to 50 degrees, with a few reports in the 30's and a low of 30 degrees in Custer. Huron once again received the least amount of rain, reporting 0.44 inch, but many areas of the state reported an inch or more, with Eureka receiving 3.02 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:    Soil moisture improved slightly from last week, as only 6 percent of the state rated short, 81 percent adequate, and 13 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions for the week rated 11 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Rains during the week did not slow planting progress, as corn is 99 percent planted, soybeans 90 percent, and sorghum 65 percent, all now ahead of the five-year average. Sunflower, at 58 percent planted, is the only row crop below average. Average corn height statewide, at 5 inches, equals the norm, while 28 percent of the corn acres are cultivated or sprayed once. Small grain development continues well behind previous years' progress, with only 16 percent of the winter wheat and 9 percent of the winter rye headed. Spring wheat is 17 percent in boot compared to 63 percent at this time last year.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Timely rains have helped keep range and pastures generally in good to excellent condition. Cattle are rated 1 percent in poor condition, 14 percent fair, 67 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Sheep are rated 99 percent in fair to excellent condition, with 1 percent rated poor. Cow/calf pairs moved to pasture increased to 96 percent complete. Alfalfa is mostly in fair to excellent condition, with 22 percent of the first cutting complete. Other hay harvested is 3 percent complete.
