AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Severe weather and cool
temperatures slowed crop development and held up
fieldwork this week, according to USDA's South
Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm
activities included planting row crops, spraying for
weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, and tending to
livestock. Statewide, there were 3.1 days reported
suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors,
and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Severe thunderstorms, along
with high winds, dumped rain and some hail across the
state last week. Precipitation ranged from 0.17 inch in
Yankton to 4.13 inches in Huron, with many other
stations reporting an inch or more. Temperatures were
mostly below normal, with a low of 34 degrees in
Custer and a high of 93 degrees reported in Vermillion
and Yankton.
SOIL CONDITION: Rain throughout the week improved soil condition across the state and left some areas with surplus moisture. Topsoil moisture conditions were 4 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 24 percent surplus. Subsoil remained mostly unchanged, with 7 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Lack of warm days with sunshine has slowed crop development, but crop condition remains mostly good to excellent, with the exception of winter wheat. Winter wheat jumped to 54 percent headed, which is 38 percentage points ahead of last week but 19 percentage points behind the five-year average. Spring wheat, oats, and barley made significant progress in the boot stage but continue to lag behind the five-year average. Soybean planting nears completion, with 96 percent seeded and 84 percent emerged. Corn is 96 percent emerged, with an average height of 8 inches, and 41 percent of the acreage sprayed or cultivated once. Sorghum and sunflower are 76 and 73 percent planted, respectively.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: With 79 percent of the pastures in good to excellent condition and 89 percent of feed supplies adequate to surplus, the livestock have been able to stay mostly in good to excellent condition. The precipitation during the week has helped keep the pastures lush but has slowed the first cutting of alfalfa. First cutting of alfalfa is 38 percent complete, which is 7 percentage points behind the five-year average. With only a few reports of weevils, alfalfa condition for the week was 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Other hay harvested is 9 percent complete.
