Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 25, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending June 24, 2001 SD-CW2501 Volume 50 Issue 25

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Sunshine during the latter part of the week gave crops a much needed boost in development and allowed farmers to complete fieldwork, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included planting row crops, spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 5.3 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Cool weather covered the state last week, as only Spearfish experienced above normal temperatures. Lows for the week were in the 40's, with a low of 38 degrees reported in Custer. Although the state experienced below normal temperatures, highs by the end of the week were in the 80's and 90's, with a high temperature of 104 degrees reported in Faith, Milesville, and Philip. Rain for the week was minimal, as some stations reported no precipitation. The largest amount, 0.83 inch, was reported in Eureka and Faulkton.

SOIL CONDITION:    Windy conditions during the week dried topsoil moisture. Areas reporting very short or short topsoil moisture increased 10 percentage points from the previous week to 14 percent. Subsoil conditions for last week were 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Sunshine during the week helped further crop development which has been slow and behind normal this season. Small grains made the largest progress as winter rye is now 74 percent headed, and winter wheat 78 percent headed and 2 percent turning color. Farmers continue weed control, as 64 percent of corn is cultivated or sprayed once and 14 percent has been cultivated or sprayed twice. Corn is in mostly good to excellent condition, with an average height of 12 inches, behind last year's 19 inches and the five-year average of 14 inches. Sorghum and sunflower planting nears completion, with 91 and 90 percent seeded, respectively.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    With little rain last week, many farmers were able to continue with their alfalfa harvest, as first cutting is 59 percent complete. Alfalfa weevils have been reported in many areas and farmers are worried about growth for the second cutting. Alfalfa condition for last week was 2 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Other hay harvested is 22 percent complete. Cattle and sheep remain mostly in good to excellent condition, with a few reports of problems with flies. Range and pastures continue to be lush and green, as 80 percent are in good to excellent condition.
