Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 2, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending July 1, 2001 SD-CW2601 Volume 50 Issue 26

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Sunshine throughout the week and warm temperatures aided crop development, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, working summer fallow, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 5.8 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Above normal temperatures covered the state last week, as temperatures ranged from 4 to 10 degrees above normal. Highs for the week ranged from the low 90's to over 100 degrees, with a high of 105 degrees reported in Philip. Lows were in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Precipitation varied, as some places reported no precipitation and Armour received 4.08 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:    Warm temperatures through the week dried up surplus soil moisture. Topsoil conditions are 3 percent very short, 13 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil conditions are 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Last week's warm temperatures and sunshine accelerated crop development. Small grains and row crops made large jumps in their respective development stages but still lag behind the previous year's marks. Winter small grains are now turning color, as winter rye is 14 percent and winter wheat is 15 percent turned. Corn is now averaging 19 inches in height, 7 inches higher than last week but 7 inches below last year's height. Soybeans are mostly in good to excellent condition, with 97 percent emerged and 3 percent blooming. Sorghum and sunflower planting nears completion, as both are 97 percent seeded.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    The warm temperatures last week had little effect on livestock, as cattle and sheep remain mostly in good to excellent condition. Range and pasture continue mainly in good to excellent condition and water supplies are adequate for livestock. Farmers continue with alfalfa harvest, with first cutting 83 percent complete and second cutting underway with 3 percent complete. Other hay is 36 percent harvested.
