Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 9, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending July 8, 2001 SD-CW2701 Volume 50 Issue 27

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Another week of sunshine and warm temperatures aided crop development but weakened soil moisture conditions, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, working summer fallow, preparing for small grain harvest, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 6.0 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Normal temperatures covered the state last week with highs in the upper 80's and 90's. Spearfish had the high for the week of 102 degrees. Yankton received the most precipitation for the week, 2.39 inches, but many stations received little or no precipitation.

SOIL CONDITION:    High temperatures throughout last week drained topsoil moisture. Areas reporting very short or short topsoil conditions increased 8 percentage points from last week. Subsoil conditions decreased slightly from last week with 2 percent reporting very short, 15 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    The weather last week was beneficial for row crops, as corn is now averaging 32 inches in height, a 13 inch increase from the previous week. Although corn is growing rapidly, soybeans are creeping along at a much slower pace. Soybeans are 8 percent in bloom, which is 12 percent behind last year's mark. Winter small grains are well into coloring stage and are now just beginning to ripen. Spring small grains are in mostly good to excellent condition and are now in the coloring stage. Sorghum planting is nearly complete, with 2 percent headed.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    The weather aided alfalfa harvest as first cutting, at 93 percent harvested, is nearly complete and second cutting is 16 percent harvested, while other hay is 51 percent harvested. Range and pasture condition remained relatively unchanged from last week. Livestock continue in mostly good to excellent condition.
