Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 16, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending July 15, 2001 SD-CW2801 Volume 50 Issue 28

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Sunshine and warm temperatures prevailed last week, accelerating crop development but weakening soil moisture conditions, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, working summer fallow, preparing for small grain harvest, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 6.2 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Slightly above normal temperatures encompassed the state last week, with highs in the low 90's. Rain was scattered and varied in amounts across the state. McIntosh received the most precipitation, 3.22 inches, while other areas of the state reported no rainfall last week.

SOIL CONDITION:    Once again, warm temperatures and little precipitation have diminished soil moisture reserves. Topsoil moisture rated very short or short increased 17 percentage points from last week, to 41 percent. Subsoil conditions also decreased, with 2 percent reporting very short, 21 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Warm weather pushed development of all crops last week. Small grains all made prominent gains in turning color. Winter wheat and rye are now beginning to ripen, with 1 percent of winter wheat harvested. Corn is 8 percent tassled, only 2 percent behind the five-year average. Corn also grew 14 inches last week, to an average height of 46 inches. Soybeans are 30 percent in bloom, with 2 percent setting pods. Sunflower is 3 percent in bloom, 2 percentage points ahead of last year's mark.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    First cutting alfalfa is now 97 percent harvested and second cutting is 42 percent harvested, while other hay is 64 percent harvested. Livestock remain mostly in good to excellent condition, with minor reports of mosquitos and fly problems. Stock water and feed supplies are adequate.
