Return to the List of 2001 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 23, 2001 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending July 22, 2001 SD-CW2801 Volume 50 Issue 29

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    High temperatures, severe weather, and scattered showers covered the state last week, putting further stress on crops and livestock, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included spraying for weeds, mending fences, cutting alfalfa, working summer fallow, preparing for small grain harvest, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there were 5.7 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  Highs in the 90's and 100's were common across the state last week, as Pierre reached 104 degrees and Philip reported a high of 105 degrees. Precipitation for the week was scattered, as Mobridge received 3.72 inches of rain while other regions of the state received no moisture.

SOIL CONDITION:    Although temperatures were in the 90's last week, humid weather conditions helped slow the depletion of soil moisture. Topsoil is now rated 45 percent short or very short of moisture. Subsoil conditions are 5 percent very short, 28 percent short, 61 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Continued heat and lack of precipitation have many farmers concerned that crops are under too much stress. Also, severe weather has damaged crops in scattered areas of the state. Harvesting of small grains is now just beginning, as winter wheat is 7 percent harvested and oats are 6 percent harvested. Corn is mostly in good to excellent condition, with 39 percent tassled and 18 percent silked. Soybeans are 53 percent blooming and 11 percent setting pods. Sorghum headed is rated at 23 percent, and sunflower is 6 percent in bloom.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Heat has had little affect on livestock condition but producers are concerned about water supplies and pasture conditions. Second cutting alfalfa is 53 percent complete and third cutting is now underway with 3 percent harvested. Other hay is 72 percent harvested.
