AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Rain and cooler
temperatures covered most of the state last week,
giving crops and livestock a break from the heat and
also providing much needed precipitation, according to
USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Major farm activities included spraying for weeds,
mending fences, cutting alfalfa, working summer
fallow, harvesting small grain, and tending to livestock.
Statewide, there were 3.9 days reported suitable for
fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors,
and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: One or more inches of rain
fell in many areas of the state last week. Sioux Falls
reported the most precipitation of 4.95 inches. Highs
for the week were in the upper 80's and low 90's,
with a high of 101 degrees reported in Rapid City.
SOIL CONDITION: With the precipitation received last week, soil moisture conditions improved across the state. Topsoil rated adequate or surplus increased 30 percentage points from last week. Topsoil is now rated 4 percent very short, 11 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions also improved, with only 19 percent rated very short or short, down 14 percentage points from a week earlier.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: After continued weeks of heat and humidity, crops finally received much needed precipitation. The rain came at an excellent time for row crops, as corn is now 77 percent tassled and 46 percent silked, slightly behind last year's 85 percent tasseled and 64 percent silked. Soybeans are 73 percent blooming, compared to 83 percent last year, and 24 percent setting pods, versus 43 percent a year earlier. Rain last week slowed small grain harvest progress, as winter wheat is 33 percent harvested, which is 27 percentage points behind the five-year average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Livestock remain in mostly good to excellent condition, with adequate feed supplies and water supplies. Pasture conditions improved from last week, with 65 percent rated in good to excellent condition. Alfalfa harvest was limited with the rain received last week. Second cutting is 68 percent harvested and third cutting is 3 percent harvested. Other hay harvested is 82 percent complete.
