AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Hot, humid weather
covered the state last week, allowing for significant
small grain harvest but putting stress on row crops and
livestock, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities
included mending fences, cutting alfalfa, harvesting
small grain, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there
were 6.2 days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors,
and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Above normal temperatures
with highs in the upper 90's and 100's covered the
state last week. Rapid City, Dupree, and Pierre had
highs of 103 degrees and Philip had a high of 107
degrees. Precipitation was scarce, as many stations
reported no accumulation for the week. Rapid City
received the most rainfall, with 1.23 inches reported.
SOIL CONDITION: With little rain last week, soil moisture condition declined across the state. Topsoil moisture rated short or very short increased 16 percentage points to 31 percent. Topsoil is now rated 8 percent very short, 23 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions are now 2 percent very short, 24 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Weather conditions accelerated small grain harvest last week. Winter wheat is now 84 percent harvested, compared to 95 percent last year and 80 percent for the five-year average. Oats are now 50 percent harvested compared to 81 percent a year ago, and spring wheat is 35 percent harvested compared to 65 percent last year. Warm weather aided row crop development, as corn is 23 percent doughing with 1 percent dented, slightly behind last year's 26 percent doughing and 8 percent dented. Soybeans are 89 percent blooming and 50 percent setting pods, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 83 percent blooming and 49 percent setting pods.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Livestock remain mostly in good to excellent condition, but producers are worried about the effects of the continued heat. Range and pasture condition declined slightly from last week but remain mostly in good to excellent condition. Alfalfa harvest continues, with second cutting 83 percent complete and third cutting 18 percent complete.
