AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Another week of extreme
heat and little precipitation covered the state part of
last week, providing excellent conditions for small grain
harvest but putting further stress on crops and
livestock, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities
included mending fences, cutting alfalfa, harvesting
small grains, and tending to livestock. Statewide, there
were 6.5 days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors,
and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Above normal temperatures,
with highs in the upper 90's and many areas reaching
the 100's, covered the state last week. Spearfish had
the high for the week of 106 degrees. Precipitation
was scarce, as many areas received no rain last week.
Custer received the most precipitation, with 0.97 inch
reported.
SOIL CONDITION: With only scattered areas receiving precipitation last week, soil conditions declined across the state. Topsoil is now 47 percent short or very short an increase of 16 percentage points from last week. Subsoil conditions also declined with 4 percent rated very short, 31 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Weather conditions allowed producers to make significant progress on small grain harvest, as spring wheat is 76 percent harvested, an increase of 41 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat and winter rye are 97 and 92 percent harvested, respectively. Corn and soybeans remain mostly in good to excellent condition but conditions are declining. Corn is 43 percent in dough and 7 percent dented, compared to last year's 47 percent in dough and 15 percent dented. Soybeans are 95 percent blooming, 75 percent setting pods, and 3 percent dropping leaves, all slightly ahead of the five-year average. Sorghum is 89 percent headed and 17 percent turning color. Sunflower ray flowers dry are rated at 17 percent, with 4 percent bracts yellow.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Alfalfa harvest continued, with second cutting 87 percent and third cutting 28 percent complete. Other hay harvested is rated at 90 percent complete. Cattle and sheep remain mostly in good to excellent condition, with reports of problems with flies. Heat and lack of moisture have decreased range and pasture conditions, but feed and stock water supplies are adequate.
