For Week Ending September 16, 2001
SD-CW3601 Volume 50 Issue 37
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Cooler temperatures,
combined with much-needed rain toward week's end,
were beneficial for winter wheat seeding, according to
USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Major farm activities for the week included cutting
silage and gearing up for row crop harvest. Statewide,
there were 5.1 days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Below normal temperatures
existed across the state last week, accompanied by
measurable amounts of rainfall. Temperatures ranged
from 2 to 6 degrees below normal. Oelrichs reported
the high of 93 degrees, while Custer recorded a low of
33 degrees. Chamberlain received the greatest amount
of rainfall, at 3.36 inches, while nine other sites
reported over two inches of precipitation.
SOIL CONDITION: A week ending in showers was much needed and welcomed by producers across the state. Fifty percent of the state is now rated with adequate topsoil moisture, an increase of 30 percentage points over last week. Only 20 percent is now rated very short of topsoil moisture, compared to 34 percent the previous week. Subsoil moisture improved to 64 percent short or very short, compared to 74 percent the previous week. The state rated as 35 percent adequate for subsoil.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Winter wheat jumped to 22 percent planted last week, ahead of last year's 18 percent, yet 12 percentage points behind the five-year average. Winter wheat reached 3 percent emerged. Corn dented was at 91 percent, mature at 35 percent, and harvested at 1 percent, compared to 90 percent dented, 38 percent mature, and 2 percent harvested a year ago. Soybeans are 57 percent dropping leaves and 21 percent mature, behind last year's 77 percent dropping leaves and 31 percent mature. Soybean harvest has just begun, with 1 percent reported harvested. Harvest of sorghum silage came in at 47 percent and corn silage 69 percent complete. Sunflower progress is at 77 percent bracts yellowing, ahead of last year and the five-year average, while 19 percent is mature and 1 percent harvested, slightly behind last year.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Farmers and ranchers are still reporting dry, browning pastures, with supplemental feeding occurring in some areas. Range and pasture conditions held steady with only 29 percent rated in good to excellent condition. Feed supplies are at 76 percent adequate to surplus, a 2 percentage point decrease from the previous week. Stock water supplies were rated as 67 percent adequate and 6 percent surplus, very similar to the previous week. Cattle were in mostly good to excellent condition, at 81 percent, while sheep rated 73 percent good to excellent.
