SD-CW3601 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 38
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Fall-like weather patterns
and additional moisture moving into the state have
slowed row crop harvest and fall tillage for many
producers and ranchers, according to USDA's South
Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm
activities for the week included preparing equipment for
harvest, cutting silage, and moving hay and cattle.
Statewide, there were 4.2 days reported suitable for
fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Average temperatures with
cloudy skies existed across much of the state,
minimizing crop harvest progress. Temperatures
ranged from highs in the mid 80's to lows recorded in
the upper 30's to low 40's. Spearfish reported the
high for last week at 88 degrees, while Custer recorded
the low of 33 degrees. Although rain was present but
minimal across most of the state, Mitchell did receive
the largest precipitation, with 1.1 inches.
SOIL CONDITION: Some rain fell across the state again last week, improving soil moisture conditions but hampering fieldwork progress in some areas. A substantial increase in topsoil moisture occurred again last week, with 73 percent now rated as adequate, 19 percent short, and only 6 percent rated as very short. Subsoil moisture improved by 16 percentage points to rate at 51 percent adequate.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Cloud cover and cooler temperatures have slowed row crop harvest progress. Corn mature increased to 56 percent, although percent harvested is reported at only 3 percent, behind last year and the five-year average. Corn silage harvest continues to progress and reached 80 percent last week. Soybeans are reported at 31 percent mature and 2 percent harvested, both behind the five-year averages, at 47 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Winter wheat planted is rated at 38 percent, while emerged is 13 percent, up 10 percent from the previous week but behind the five-year average. Grain sorghum mature increased to 55 percent. Grain sorghum harvest continues to move along slowly, with only 5 percent harvested, 9 percentage points behind last year. Sunflower progress is at 87 percent bracts yellowing, 40 percent mature, and 2 percent harvested.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Farmers and ranchers began weaning calves and moving cattle to winter pastures last week. Range and pasture conditions showed little change, with 41 percent in fair condition and 31 percent in good to excellent condition. Feed supplies are at 77 percent adequate to surplus. An improvement in water supplies was seen last week, with 74 percent rated as adequate and 3 percent surplus. Cattle remain in mostly good to excellent condition, at 79 percent. Sheep condition increased to 83 percent good to excellent, a 10 percentage point difference from the previous week.
