SD-CW3901 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 39
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Clear skies and warm
temperatures last week helped dry row crops and
allowed producers to spend time in the fields
harvesting, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities for
the week included preparing equipment for harvest,
moving hay and cattle, and working calves. Statewide,
there were 6.5 days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Beautiful autumn
temperatures and dry conditions were prevalent across
the state, with a few reports of light frosts in some
areas. Average temperatures ranged from 52 to 65
degrees. Hot Springs reported the high for last week at
94 degrees, while Brookings recorded the low of 28
degrees. No rain was recorded for the week.
SOIL CONDITION: No precipitation was received last week, hurting soil moisture levels across the state. Topsoil moisture levels declined and are now rated at 8 percent very short, 25 percent short, and 66 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture is 11 percent very short, 35 percent short, and 53 percent adequate. Average soil temperature is reported at 61 degrees.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Excellent weather conditions helped row crops mature last week, enabling producers to get a jump on harvest. Corn increased to 84 percent mature, up 28 percentage points from the previous week. Corn harvested, at 11 percent, is 5 percentage points behind last year's pace, but 1 point ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans made significant progress from a week ago, with 94 percent now reporting leaves dropping, 65 percent mature, and 15 percent harvested; however, all three stages are behind last year. Sunflower are reported at 96 percent bracts yellowing and 68 percent mature. Harvested sunflower increased from 2 percent a week ago to 10 percent harvested, 4 percentage points behind the five-year average and 18 points behind last year. Winter wheat seeding continues to progress despite dry conditions, with 72 percent complete, 13 percentage points ahead of last year and right in line with the five-year average. Thirty-three percent of the winter wheat crop has emerged.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Farmers and ranchers continue to move cattle and wean calves. Range and pasture conditions showed some improvement, with reports of greener pastures thanks to cooler temperatures and added moisture received toward the end of September. Range and pasture conditions are 41 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Feed supplies are at 81 percent adequate to surplus. No change was seen in water supplies, with 77 percent still adequate to surplus. Cattle and sheep remain in mostly good to excellent condition, at 83 and 86 percent respectively.
