SD-CW4101 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 41
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Rain showers fell across
the state mid-week, slowing row crop harvest
temporarily but leaving much needed moisture for
winter wheat and rye emergence, according to USDA's
South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major
farm activities for the week included harvesting of row
crops, moving cattle to harvested acres, moving hay,
and fixing fences. Statewide, there were 4.6 days
reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Rain fell in most areas of
the state by Wednesday, with 12 reporting stations
recording over an inch of precipitation by week's end.
Vermillion received the greatest amount of rainfall with
2.46 inches. Temperatures ranged from a high of 82
degrees in Oelrichs to a low of 27 degrees in Hot
Springs.
SOIL CONDITION: Winter seedings and pastures will benefit from the precipitation received last week. Both topsoil and subsoil moisture levels improved with the additional moisture. Topsoil is now rated at 6 percent very short, 22 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture now stands at 8 percent very short, 34 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Average soil temperature reported for last week was 53 degrees.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Despite a week with measurable precipitation, row crop harvest pushed forward at a steady pace. Harvest progress is behind last year but on track with the five-year average. Soybeans harvested moved to 65 percent complete, still behind last year's average of 82 percent, but 1 percentage point ahead of the five-year average. Corn harvested increased by 12 percentage points to 30 percent complete, behind last year's 44 percent, but ahead of the five-year average of 27 percent. Sunflower are reported at 39 percent harvested, still lagging behind last year's 62 percent and the five-year average of 42 percent. Winter wheat seeding is nearing completion at 92 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous week and equaling the five-year average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Farmers and ranchers are starting to move cattle to harvested corn acres, as some pastures are short on grass. Cattle rated 83 percent and sheep 86 percent in good to excellent condition. Range and pasture conditions are now 9 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Feed supplies are rated at 81 percent adequate to surplus, while stock water is now reported at 73 percent adequate to surplus.
