AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Cooler temperatures and
light scattered rainfall across the state did not hinder
South Dakota's producers from moving ahead with
their fall field crop and livestock activities, according to
USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Major farm activities for the week included harvesting
of row crops, fall planting, fertilizer applications,
hauling hay, fall tillage, fencing, moving cattle to
harvested acres and winter pastures, and weaning and
selling calves. Statewide, there were 6.0 days
reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Temperatures ranged from
the mid-teens to high 70's last week, with
temperatures averaging 2 degrees below normal across
the state. A high of 79 degrees was reported in Long
Valley and Winner, while Brookings and Madison
recorded a low of 13 degrees. Scattered light
precipitation fell across the state, with 40 percent of
the reporting stations having zero precipitation. Buffalo
and Eureka both reported 0.10 inch of rain last week.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil moisture levels declined slightly across the state again this past week. The eastern portion of the state remains at mostly adequate for topsoil and subsoil moisture, while many western counties continue to see short or very short soil moisture levels. Areas reporting short or very short topsoil moisture covered 36 percent of the state, while areas reporting short or very short subsoil moisture now cover 43 percent of the state.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Scattered light rains and mixed snow in parts of the state delayed row crop progress momentarily this past week. Soybeans harvested increased 9 points, from last week's 86 percent, to 95 percent complete. This is in line with last year and the five-year average. Corn harvested rose 21 points to 64 percent harvested. This is 4 points above the five-year average but 12 points behind last year. Sorghum harvested for grain is at 88 percent complete, keeping the same pace as last year. Sunflower jumped up 21 points to 75 percent complete. This is behind both last year and the five- year average. Winter wheat seeding is virtually complete. Winter wheat emergence, at 88 percent, is ahead of the previous year and the five-year average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Cattle are being turned out on crop residues to take advantage of additional feed sources, while some producers are baling corn stalks to add to their supply of feed. Feed supplies rated at 82 percent adequate to surplus, up 1 point from last week. Stock water supplies rated at 73 percent adequate to surplus, down 6 points from last week. Cattle and sheep remain in good condition.
