SD-CW4401 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 44
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Beautiful fall weather
along with above normal temperatures made conditions
excellent for harvesting, according to USDA's South
Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm
activities for the week included harvesting of row crops,
fall tillage, fertilizer applications, hauling hay, fixing
fences, and weaning calves. Statewide, there were 6.6
days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Above average
temperatures were felt across the entire state last
week, with the state averaging 10 degrees above
normal. A high of 83 degrees was reported in
Pickstown, while Oelrichs and Porcupine recorded lows
of 23 degrees. Little precipitation fell across the state
last week. Porcupine reported the most rainfall, at 0.15
inch.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil moisture levels declined once again across the state this past week. Topsoil is rated at 11 percent very short, 33 percent short, and 56 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture levels are reported at 11 percent very short, 35 percent short, 53 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Average soil temperature was reported at 47.4 degrees.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Producers welcomed clear skies and above average temperatures last week, enabling continued progress on row crop harvest. Soybean harvest is very near completion with 98 percent now harvested, right in line with the five-year average and last year's progress. Corn harvested increased to 84 percent complete, ahead of the five- year average, but behind last year's 86 percent. Sorghum harvested for grain increased 6 percentage points to 94 percent now harvested, equaling last year's progress, but ahead of the five-year average of 84 percent. Sunflower harvest also made good progress, with 89 percent of the crop now harvested, up 14 percentage points from a week ago. Winter wheat emergence is at 91 percent.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Producers continue to move hay and prepare for the winter feeding season, in addition to moving cattle to harvested acres. Both cattle and sheep remain in mostly good to excellent condition. Feed supplies rated 79 percent adequate to surplus, while stock water supplies rated 71 percent adequate to surplus, both showing a small decline from the previous week.
