SD-CW4501 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 45
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Producers took advantage
of another week of gorgeous fall weather, pushing row
crop harvest very close to completion, according to
USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Major farm activities for the week included harvesting
of row crops, fall tillage, hauling hay, fixing fences,
storing machinery, and servicing and repairing snow
removal equipment. Statewide, there were 6.7 days
reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: A continued warm weather
trend was experienced across the state again last week.
The state averaged 12 degrees above normal, with
highs reaching into the 80's. Chamberlain and Winner
recorded highs of 83 degrees, while Porcupine marked
the low of 11 degrees. Only trace levels of precipitation
were recorded last week at three reporting stations.
Hot Springs received the most moisture with 0.13 inch.
SOIL CONDITION: Another week with little in the way of precipitation resulted in declined soil moisture levels. Topsoil is rated at 14 percent very short, 38 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels are reported at 13 percent very short, 40 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Average soil temperature for the week was reported at 46.1 degrees.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Continued dry conditions last week brought row crop harvest closer to completion, with harvest now ahead of last year's progress as well as the five-year average. Corn harvested increased to 95 percent complete, ahead of the five-year average by 8 percentage points, and ahead of last year's average by 3 percentage points. Sorghum harvested for grain is at 98 percent complete, ahead of both last year's and the five-year average. Sunflower harvest progress moved to 97 percent complete, one percentage point ahead of last year and 2 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Winter wheat emergence is at 95 percent.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Farmers and ranchers continue to move hay in preparation for the winter. Livestock are still being moved to harvested corn acres in order to utilize all available feed sources. Both cattle and sheep remain in mostly good to excellent condition going into the winter months. Feed supplies rated 83 percent adequate to surplus, while stock water supplies rated 78 percent adequate to surplus, both improved from a week ago.
