AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: The week ending April 7
brought below normal temperatures and precipitation
across the state, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities
included caring for newborn calves and lambs, hauling
grain and seed, spreading fertilizer, mending fences,
and preparing farm machinery for spring planting
season. Producers are anticipating little to no
fieldwork for at least one more week. Statewide, there
were only 1.7 days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: For the week ending April
7, temperatures averaged 35.2 degrees, 6.4 degrees
below normal. A high of 83 degrees was reported in
Philip and a low of 0 degrees was reported in Faulkton.
Statewide precipitation totals since January averaged
1.31 inches, which is 1.26 inches below normal. Total
precipitation for April for the whole state only
accumulated a trace. Most precipitation in April was
reported by the Spearfish station at 0.63 inch.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil temperatures from reporting stations averaged 37.4 degrees, compared to 33.5 degrees the last week of March. Topsoil moisture is reported at 6 percent very short, 26 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is 8 percent very short, 28 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 2 surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Little has been reported in the way of spring field activity, due to cold temperatures and wet fields. Winter wheat progress is reported at 14 percent breaking dormancy, up 11 points from the previous week. Winter rye is at 2 percent breaking dormancy. Winter wheat condition is at 81 percent fair to excellent, a slight improvement from last week's 80 percent. Producers are anticipating an April 16 start date for fieldwork.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Calving and lambing are still progressing despite unfavorable weather conditions, with 45 percent of calving complete and 59 percent of lambing done. Calf deaths are reported at 26 percent below average, 69 percent average, and 5 percent above average. Sheep and lamb deaths are also reported at mostly average to below average. Very few cattle have been moved to pasture due to low resources.
