Return to the List of 2002 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: April 7, 2002 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Month Ending April 7, 2002 SD-CW1402 Volume 51 Issue 14

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:   The week ending April 7 brought below normal temperatures and precipitation across the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included caring for newborn calves and lambs, hauling grain and seed, spreading fertilizer, mending fences, and preparing farm machinery for spring planting season. Producers are anticipating little to no fieldwork for at least one more week. Statewide, there were only 1.7 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  For the week ending April 7, temperatures averaged 35.2 degrees, 6.4 degrees below normal. A high of 83 degrees was reported in Philip and a low of 0 degrees was reported in Faulkton. Statewide precipitation totals since January averaged 1.31 inches, which is 1.26 inches below normal. Total precipitation for April for the whole state only accumulated a trace. Most precipitation in April was reported by the Spearfish station at 0.63 inch.

SOIL CONDITION:   Soil temperatures from reporting stations averaged 37.4 degrees, compared to 33.5 degrees the last week of March. Topsoil moisture is reported at 6 percent very short, 26 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is 8 percent very short, 28 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 2 surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:   Little has been reported in the way of spring field activity, due to cold temperatures and wet fields. Winter wheat progress is reported at 14 percent breaking dormancy, up 11 points from the previous week. Winter rye is at 2 percent breaking dormancy. Winter wheat condition is at 81 percent fair to excellent, a slight improvement from last week's 80 percent. Producers are anticipating an April 16 start date for fieldwork.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Calving and lambing are still progressing despite unfavorable weather conditions, with 45 percent of calving complete and 59 percent of lambing done. Calf deaths are reported at 26 percent below average, 69 percent average, and 5 percent above average. Sheep and lamb deaths are also reported at mostly average to below average. Very few cattle have been moved to pasture due to low resources.
