Return to the List of 2002 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: June 3, 2002 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending June 2, 2002 SD-CW2202 Volume 51 Issue 22

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:   Producers welcomed a week of sunshine and above normal temperatures after several weeks of cool weather. The warm weather improved lagging crop emergence and development, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included row crop seeding, spraying and applying fertilizer, fixing fences, and moving cattle to pasture. Statewide, there were 6.1 days reported suitable for fieldwork last week. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  After weeks of below- average temperatures, warm weather covered the state last week. Temperatures were 5 to 10 degrees above normal, with highs in the 80's and 90's. A high of 97 degrees was reported in Yankton. Varying amounts of precipitation were reported across the state, with some stations receiving only trace amounts while a few received more than an inch. Vermillion reported the greatest amount of precipitation at 3.24 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:   Soil moisture conditions are a growing concern for producers, as 57 percent of the state is reporting short or very short topsoil conditions. Topsoil is now rated at 19 percent very short, 38 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil condition is rated 16 percent very short, 35 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:   Warm temperatures aided crop emergence and development last week. Farmers welcomed the sunshine, but soil moisture levels are a growing concern. Corn planted nears completion, as corn is now 97 percent seeded, and soybeans are 86 percent seeded, both ahead of the five-year average. Corn is 72 percent emerged, which is a 38 percentage point increase from the previous week. Soybeans emerged increased 32 percentage points from the previous week to 38 percent emerged. Winter wheat in boot stage is reported at 56 percent and 9 percent headed, both ahead of last year's mark but behind average. Sunflower and sorghum are 36 and 42 percent seeded, respectively.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Range and pasture conditions continue to decline due to lack of precipitation. Range and pasture conditions rated 33 percent in poor or very poor condition, compared to 24 percent last week. Livestock are in mostly good to excellent condition. Cattle are 87 percent moved to pasture. Alfalfa harvest is now underway, with first cutting 4 percent harvested.
