AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Warm weather covered
the state last week, further depleting moisture levels
and deteriorating small grain crop conditions, according
to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics
Service. Major farm activities included row crop
seeding, spraying and applying fertilizer, cutting
alfalfa, fixing fences, and moving cattle to pasture.
Statewide, there were 6.1 days reported suitable for
fieldwork last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Warm weather continued
last week, as highs were mostly in the 80's and 90's,
with a high of 96 degrees reported in Onida and Pierre.
Precipitation was scarce, as most areas received little to
no moisture last week. Armour reported the greatest
amount of precipitation at 1.92 inches.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil conditions declined from the previous week as topsoil moisture is now rated 64 percent short or very short, compared to 57 percent the week before. Topsoil is 30 percent very short, 34 percent short, 35 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil condition is rated 22 percent very short, 37 percent short, 39 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: As warm temperatures have aided row crop emergence and development, lack of adequate moisture has led to a decline in small grain crop conditions. Producers attribute declining conditions to the shortage in precipitation. Winter wheat is 74 percent in boot stage with 37 percent headed, ahead of last year's mark but behind average. Corn is 90 percent emerged and averaging 6 inches in height. Soybean planting is nearly complete, with 96 percent seeded, ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Sunflower and sorghum are both 74 percent planted, also ahead of average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: As conditions continue to decline, producers are concerned with the ability of pasture and range to sustain livestock. Livestock are in mostly good to excellent condition, but pasture and range conditions are rated 42 percent poor or very poor, compared to 33 percent a week earlier. Cattle are 93 percent moved to pasture. Alfalfa harvest continues, with first cutting 20 percent harvested.
