Return to the List of 2002 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: June 17, 2002 -- 3:00 p.m. CST For Week Ending June 16, 2002 SD-CW2402 Volume 51 Issue 23

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:   Dry weather continues, further deteriorating crop and pasture conditions and lowering soil moisture levels across the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included row crop seeding, spraying and applying fertilizer, cutting alfalfa, fixing fences, and moving cattle to pasture. Statewide, there were 6.4 days reported suitable for fieldwork last week. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:  A cooling trend crossed the state last week, as average temperatures were in the upper 60's. Highs were in the 80's and 90's, but lows fell into the 40's in most areas. The state continues to be short on moisture, as little precipitation was received last week. Most reporting stations recorded no rainfall to only trace amounts. Vermillion received the greatest precipitation, at 1.24 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:   Last week brought very little precipitation to the state, further depleting soil moisture conditions. Topsoil moisture is at 45 percent very short, 31 percent short, and 24 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture is now rated at 33 percent very short, 36 percent short, 30 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:   Lack of moisture across the state has led to a decline in small grain crop conditions. Winter wheat condition is rated 65 percent poor or very poor, an 11 percentage point increase from the previous week. Although small grain conditions are not exceptional, development is ahead of the previous year and tracking with the five-year average for most stages. Corn is 98 percent emerged and averaging 10 inches in height. Soybean planting is now complete, with 93 percent of the crop emerged. Sunflower and sorghum planting nears completion with 90 percent and 87 percent seeded, respectively, both ahead of last year and the five-year average.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Range and pasture conditions continue to decline due to lack of precipitation. Range and pasture condition is now rated 56 percent very poor or poor, a 14 percentage point increase from the previous week. Livestock remain in mostly good to excellent condition, but water quality and supply is a growing concern for many producers. First cutting alfalfa is 45 percent harvested and other hay is 10 percent harvested.
