AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Thundershowers were
received in some areas of the state last week, with
some locations experiencing severe weather, according
to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Although much needed rain fell in parts of the state,
precipitation was spotty, leaving the majority of the
state with deteriorating soil moisture levels. Major farm
activities included cutting hay, spraying crops and
pasture, fixing fences, and moving cattle to market.
Statewide, there were 6.0 days reported suitable for
fieldwork last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Above average
temperatures were recorded at all reporting stations last
week. Average temperatures were in the 70's,
however, most areas of the state felt 90 degree
temperatures for highs. Philip was the warmest spot in
the state last week, with a high of 101 degrees. Most
areas of the state received at least trace amounts of
precipitation for the week. Sisseton received the
greatest amount of precipitation, with 3.23 inches
recorded.
SOIL CONDITION: Isolated thundershowers throughout the state were a welcomed sight, however, little improvement was seen in soil conditions. Topsoil moisture is at 44 percent very short, 27 percent short, 28 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is now rated at 39 percent very short, 29 percent short, 31 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Small grain conditions continue to tumble with the persistent warm, dry weather patterns. Spring wheat condition is rated 61 percent poor or very poor, a 7 percentage point increase from the previous week. Small grain development has moved rapidly with the drought-like conditions. Small grain development is ahead of previous year and five-year averages for most stages. Corn height is 16 averaging inches, ahead of last year's 11 inches and the five-year average of 14 inches. Soybeans are 97 percent emerged and 1 percent blooming. Both sunflower and sorghum plantings are nearly completed, as both are reported at 97 percent seeded.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Pasture conditions slipped again last week with 62 percent now reported in poor to very poor condition. First cutting alfalfa is 70 percent harvested and other hay is 20 percent harvested. Regrowth in alfalfa fields is a growing concern for producers due to low moisture levels. Livestock remain in mostly good to excellent condition, but each week brings more concern for water quality and availability.
