AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY: Some areas did receive
spotty rain, with some locations receiving hail and
high winds, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Conditions have
worsened as hot, dry weather continues across the
state. Major farm activities included cutting hay,
spraying crops and pasture, fixing fences, planting,
cultivating, and moving cattle to market. Statewide,
there were 6.3 days reported suitable for fieldwork
last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION: Above average
temperatures were recorded at all reporting stations
last week, ranging from 6 to 14 degrees above normal.
Average temperatures were in the upper 70's to low
80's, however, most areas of the state felt 100 degree
temperatures for highs. Milesville was the warmest
spot in the state last week, with a high of 113
degrees. Some areas of the state received at least
trace amounts of precipitation for the week.
Chamberlain received the greatest amount of
precipitation, with 1.05 inches recorded.
SOIL CONDITION: Scattered rain showers and above normal temperatures affected topsoil moisture and subsoil moisture levels. When compared to last week, both showed an increase in the very short to short category by 10 to 11 points. Topsoil moisture is at 48 percent very short, 34 percent short, and 18 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture is at 45 percent very short, 33 percent short, 21 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Small grain conditions continue to decrease with the persistent warm, dry weather patterns. Some wheat is reported being cut for hay due to the quality of wheat and low feed supplies. Winter wheat condition is rated 76 percent poor or very poor, a 12 percentage point increase from the previous week. Winter wheat turning color, now 63 percent, jumped 46 points from last week's 17 percent. Spring wheat condition is rated 68 percent poor or very poor, another 7 percentage point increase from the previous week. Spring wheat turning color is just started at 3 percent complete. Small grain development has moved rapidly with the drought-like conditions. Small grain development is ahead of the previous year and five-year averages for most stages. Corn height is averaging 23 inches, ahead of last year's 18 inches and the five-year average of 21 inches. Soybeans blooming is 5 percent complete, compared to 3 percent last year and 6 percent on average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Pasture conditions slipped slightly again last week, with 65 percent now reported in poor to very poor condition, up 3 points from the previous week. First cutting alfalfa is 79 percent harvested and other hay is 33 percent harvested. The availability of adequate moisture for a second cutting of alfalfa fields and regrowth of pastures is still a growing concern for producers. Cattle conditions slipped some from the excellent and good to the fair category, with some reports of cattle getting stuck in the mud along watering holes. Sheep conditions shifted more to the good category this past week.
