For Week ending November 10, 2002
SD-CW4502 Volume 51 Issue 45
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Slightly above normal
temperatures and minimal precipitation last week
were greatly needed and helped speed-up harvest
progress after the cool, wet weather of previous
weeks, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities
included harvesting row crops, hauling grain, manure
hauling and, fall fertilizing, fall tillage, baling corn
stalks, weaning and selling calves, moving cattle to
fall grazing, and winterizing equipment. Statewide,
there were 5.0 days reported suitable for fieldwork
last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
The above normal
temperatures last week helped lower grain moisture in
the remaining unharvested crops. Last week's weather
conditions were quite a change from the previous
week's cold, wet weather. The average temperature
for the state was 40 degrees, 4 degrees above normal.
The lowest daily temperature reported was13 degrees
in Long Valley and the highest daily temperature
reported was 74 degrees in Yankton. Precipitation was
only reported at 7 weather stations and all were under
0.10 inch. Some light rain and snow were reported
across the state.
SOIL CONDITION: Topsoil moisture is rated short or very short across 45 percent of the state, 3 points below last week. Subsoil moisture is rated at 59 percent short or very short, 4 points below last week. Soil temperatures from reporting stations averaged 37.5 degrees. This is up 1.5 degrees from last week but 1.6 degrees below normal.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: The corn crop is now 69 percent harvested, compared to 93 percent last year and the five-year average of 89 percent. Mud and high-moisture corn are still slowing harvest in some areas. Soybeans are rated 95 percent harvested, compared to 100 percent last year and the five-year average of 99 percent. Sorghum for grain has reached 87 percent harvested, while sunflower are now 85 percent harvested, both behind last year's progress. Winter wheat emergence is at 96 percent, compared to 94 percent last year.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Producers continued to utilize crop residues and stalk bales as feed sources last week. Feed supplies are rated at 28 percent very short, 30 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Cattle and sheep remained in mostly fair to good condition last week.
