Return to the List of 2002 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: November 25, 2002 -- 3:00 pm CST For Week ending November 24, 2002 SD-CW4702 Volume 51 Issue 47

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Good November weather last week allowed harvest to near completion, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major farm activities included harvesting row crops, hauling grain, fall tillage and fertilizing, baling corn and soybean residue, weaning and selling calves, moving cattle to fall grazing, and winterizing equipment as harvest winds down. Statewide, there were 6.4 days reported suitable for fieldwork last week. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Above-normal temperatures and minimal precipitation were common again last week. The average temperature for the state was 40 degrees, 10 degrees above normal. The lowest daily temperature reported was 32 degrees in Webster and the highest daily temperature reported was 46 degrees in Rapid City. Precipitation was reported at only 6 of the 43 weather stations. Spearfish reported the greatest amount of precipitation at 0.56 inches. The 5 other stations reported 0.16 inch or less.

SOIL CONDITION:    With last week's minimal precipitation, soil moisture conditions remained steady. Topsoil is reported at 16 very short, 27 short, 55 adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 53 percent short or very short. Soil temperatures from reporting stations averaged 38.3 degrees. This is up 1.2 degrees from last week, and 0.29 degree below normal.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Corn harvest progress moved up 11 points last week and is now 95 percent harvested, compared to 100 percent last year and the five-year average of 96 percent. Sorghum for grain has reached 99 percent harvested, while sunflower are now 97 percent harvested, both behind last year's progress.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Farmers and ranchers continue to prepare for the coming winter by baling stalks and using harvested fields for livestock grazing. Feed supplies have improved slightly from last week and are rated at 22 percent very short, 37 percent short, 39 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated at 29 percent very short, 25 percent short, 44 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. The condition of cattle and sheep changed slightly from last week but remained in mostly fair to good condition. The livestock feed and water supply comparison table was added to show current drought conditions.
