SD-CW2203 Volume 52 Issue 22
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Producers welcomed a
week of above-normal temperatures and were dealing
with windy conditions toward the end of the week,
according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural
Statistics Service. Major farm activities included row
crop seeding, spraying and applying fertilizer, fixing
fences, and moving cattle to pasture. Statewide, there
were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
The majority of the state
received above-average temperatures last week, with
the high of 96 degrees in Oelrichs. The low for the
week was 38 degrees, received in McIntosh. Varying
amounts of precipitation were received across the state,
with some stations reporting no moisture and others
reporting trace amounts. Hot Springs reported the
greatest amount of precipitation, at 0.55 inch.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil moisture conditions fell again last week, due to minimal precipitation received across most of the state. Topsoil moisture fell from 88 percent adequate to surplus, to 76 percent adequate to surplus. The subsoil moisture rating fell 4 percentage points, to 66 percent adequate to surplus.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Warm temperatures not only aided planting progress, but also crop emergence and development last week. Small grain crops are in mostly good to excellent condition, with emergence of barley, oats, and spring wheat nearing completion. The percentage of barley, oats, and spring wheat in the boot stage are 6 percent, 8 percent, and 31 percent, respectively. Barley and oats in the boot stage are behind the five-year averages, while spring wheat is 15 points ahead of average. Corn is in good to excellent condition, with planting 96 percent completed and emergence at 71 percent. Average corn height is 3 inches, with 24 percent of the corn crop already cultivated or sprayed once. Soybeans are 79 percent planted and 23 percent emerged. Sorghum is slightly ahead of the five-year average, with 43 percent planted. Sunflower is rated at 19 percent planted, 22 percent behind the five-year average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Range and pasture rated good to excellent, at 46 percent, were unchanged from a week earlier. Cattle being moved to pasture reached 87 percent, which is in-line with the five-year average. Alfalfa hay harvested was rated at 15 percent complete for the first cutting, while other hay was 3 percent harvested. The livestock feed and water supply comparison table was added to show current conditions.
