AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Crop planting continued
through a week of average weather. Scattered rains
caused some delays, with hay baling also being affected,
according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics
Service. Major farm activities included spraying, haying,
planting row crops, cutting alfalfa, fixing fences, and
moving cattle to pasture. Statewide, there were 5.5 days
suitable for fieldwork last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Average temperatures were
mainly in the 60's last week, with the high for the state at
91 degrees, in Dupree, Milesville, Long Valley, and
Highmore. The low was 39 degrees in Custer. Custer also
received the most precipitation for the week, at 2.19
inches. All but three of forty-three weather stations
reported precipitation last week.
SOIL CONDITION: Both topsoil and subsoil moisture levels, rated adequate to surplus, dropped slightly last week, with topsoil falling 7 points and subsoil falling 3 points. Conditions are better than last year, with 73 percent of topsoil rated at adequate to surplus, compared to last year's 26 percent. Subsoil is now rated at 65 percent adequate to surplus, compared to last year's 32 percent.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Planting of soybeans is virtually complete, while planting of sunflower and sorghum continues. Corn planting has reached completion, with emergence rated at 97 percent, the same as last year. The average corn height is 7 inches, compared to 9 inches for last year and the five-year average. Corn has been cultivated or sprayed once for 56 percent of the acreage, and is ahead of average. Planting of soybeans has reached 98 percent completion, with emergence rated at 82 percent, slightly behind last year. Sorghum and sunflower are rated at 85 and 76 percent planted, respectively. Winter wheat headed jumped 36 points and is ahead of normal. The winter wheat crop is just starting to turn color, with the rating at 3 percent. This is ahead of last year, but behind the five-year average. Barley headed is at 11 percent, ahead of last year, but 7 points behind the average. Oats headed is rated at 15 percent, in line with last year, yet 5 points behind the average. Spring wheat headed is ahead of last year, but behind the average at 13 percent headed.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Range and pasture conditions remain steady, with livestock doing the same. Cattle being moved to pasture has reached 96 percent. The first cutting of alfalfa is 53 percent harvested, with other hay 16 percent harvested. Alfalfa condition improved slightly last week, however some farmers reported problems with rain falling before cut hay had been baled. The livestock feed and water supply comparison table was added to show current conditions.
