AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Last week brought severe
weather to some areas of the state, with many parts
receiving welcomed showers, according to USDA's
South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Precipitation was spotty, with moisture levels in several
areas of the state decreasing slightly. Major farm
activities included cutting and baling hay, spraying crops
and pasture, cultivating, planting row crops, and fixing
fences. Statewide, there were 5.9 days suitable for
fieldwork last week.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Above-average temperatures
were recorded for all but one of the 43 reporting
stations last week. Average temperatures were mostly
in the 70's, with the high of 95 degrees received in
Philip and the low of 43 degrees received in Custer. All
stations, except Vermillion, reported precipitation last
week. Webster received the most precipitation, at 4.01
inches.
SOIL CONDITION: Isolated thundershowers throughout the state were welcomed by farmers, however, topsoil and subsoil moisture levels decreased slightly. Topsoil moisture is 66 percent adequate to surplus, compared to last week's 73 percent. Subsoil moisture dropped four points last week in the adequate to surplus categories.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Small grain conditions fell slightly with the warm, sunny weather of last week. Winter wheat is rated at 96 percent headed and 23 percent turning color. Barley is rated at 83 percent in boot, 44 percent headed, and 1 percent turning color. Oats are currently rated at 89 percent in boot and 49 percent headed. Spring wheat is rated at 90 percent in boot, 50 percent headed, and 1 percent turning color. Row crops remain in good to excellent condition. Corn height, at 12 inches, has increased 5 inches last week. Seventy-nine percent of corn has been cultivated or sprayed once, while 21 percent has been cultivated or sprayed twice. Soybean emergence, at 96 percent, is slightly ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans blooming are rated at 1 percent, in line with last year and the five-year average. Planting of both sorghum and soybeans is nearly complete. Sunflower are rated at 94 percent planted, ahead of the five-year average of 92 percent.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Range and pasture conditions remain good to excellent. The majority of cattle and sheep are in good to excellent condition, also. Stock water supplies were adequate to surplus. Alfalfa condition decreased slightly last week, with 57 percent good to excellent compared to the previous week's 64 percent. The first cutting harvest of alfalfa is rated at 75 percent complete. The livestock feed and water supply comparison table was added to show current conditions.
