AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Continued high
temperatures and sparse precipitation took it's toll on
farmers and ranchers last week, according to USDA's
South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Moisture
levels continue to decline, causing stress to crops.
Major farm activities included cutting hay, spraying,
fixing fence, hauling water to livestock, and preparing
for harvesting.
This report is based on information from county
extension educators, farm service agency county
directors, and other reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Above-normal temperatures
covered the state last week. Average temperatures
were in the upper 60's and lower 70's. The high for
the week was 101 degrees in Chamberlain, and the low
was 37 degrees in Brookings. Precipitation was
received in only 2 of the 43 reporting weather stations.
Oelrichs received 0.02 inch, and Porcupine received
0.10 inch.
SOIL CONDITION: With no significant rainfall across the state last week, topsoil and subsoil moisture levels continued to fall even further behind last year's ratings. Topsoil moisture fell 5 percentage points in the adequate category last week and is currently rated 9 percent adequate. With 91 percent either short or very short, topsoil moisture was rated 45 percent adequate to surplus last year. Subsoil moisture also fell last week with 13 percent currently rated adequate, compared to last week's 20 percent. Subsoil moisture was rated 33 percent adequate to surplus last year.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Continued dry weather has caused some farmers to get a jump-start on harvest; however, combining in the majority of the state has not been significant. Corn is 71 percent dented, an increase of 27 percentage points from the previous week, with progress slightly behind both last year and the five-year average. The corn crop is rated at 14 percent mature, behind last year's 23 percent and the five-year average of 18 percent. Soybeans dropping leaves advanced 19 percentage points last week with 47 percent now having dropped leaves, ahead of the five-year average of 41 percent. Soybeans are rated at 6 percent mature, up from 3 percent last week. Sorghum mature, at 9 percent, has fallen behind last year's 16 percent, with sorghum harvested for grain just starting at 1 percent complete. Sunflower progress is behind last year and the five-year average, with 67 percent having ray flowers dry and 43 percent having bracts yellow. Sunflower maturity increased slightly last week, with the current rating of 4 percent behind last year's 6 percent and the five-year average of 7 percent. Silage harvest is in line with last year's progress. Corn and sorghum silage are 39 and 43 percent harvested, respectively, compared to last year's 39 and 42 percent. Winter wheat and winter rye are both rated at 10 percent planted, with no emergence as of yet.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Alfalfa harvest continues where possible with the third cutting harvest 75 percent complete, up 12 points from the previous week. Livestock remain in mostly fair to good condition. Range and pasture condition decreased slightly last week with 15 percent rated good to excellent, compared to the previous week's 20 percent and the five-year average of 45 percent.
