Return to the List of 2004 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: June 1, 2004 -- 3:00 pm CST For Week ending May 30, 2004 SD-CW2204 Volume 53 Issue 22

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Severe weather and flooding delayed seeding and will necessitate replanting of corn and soybeans in some eastern parts of the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Drier conditions continue to negatively impact the stock water supplies and range conditions in the southwest. Cool, windy conditions limited most agricultural activity for the week, but producers did make some limited progress on corn spraying/cultivation. Statewide there were 3.8 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Temperatures averaged 3.7 degrees below normal for the state last week, with a high of 90 reported in both Philip and Porcupine, which also recorded the week's low of 33. Cool, rainy conditions prevailed for the latter part of the week. Nearly all eastern reporting stations recorded precipitation in excess of 1 inch. Sioux Falls recorded the high for the state with 5.34 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:    Soil conditions improved again last week. The largest improvement was in subsoil moisture conditions, which improved to 47 percent adequate to surplus from 36 percent a week ago. Subsoil moisture continues to be short to very short across the central and west. In the east, topsoil moisture is adequate with many reports indicating surplus topsoil moisture. Conversely, topsoil moisture continues to be short in the west to very short in the southwest.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    The condition of corn and all small grains improved slightly from last week. Soybeans were rated for the first time this week at 69% good to excellent. Nevertheless, flooding and ponding from the week's heavy rains will result in replanting of corn and soybeans in some eastern areas. A minimal amount of alfalfa and other hay was harvested. The first cutting will be shorter in some areas due to dry conditions earlier this season. Weed control was limited and crops are reported slow to germinate and mature in some areas due to the cool, wet conditions.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Pasture and range conditions improved to 31 percent now rated good to excellent, primarily due to heavy rainfall in the east again last week. Rain was less widespread across the west and central. Moisture that did fall in the drier areas was not substantial enough to produce runoff for dry stock dams. Recent rains have kept pastures green in most areas, but the grass is shorter due to below- average temperatures. Livestock remain in predominately good condition, with 81 percent of cattle moved to pasture.
