Return to the List of 2004 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: June 7, 2004 -- 3:00 pm CST For Week ending June 6, 2004 SD-CW2304 Volume 53 Issue 23

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Early week rains delayed the completion of soybean seeding and first cutting alfalfa harvest in eastern parts of the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers are preparing to take advantage of warmer, drier conditions, which should move the first cutting alfalfa harvest and cultivation/spraying into full swing. Conditions remain very dry in the west and central, as livestock producers begin to weigh feed and water options. Statewide there were 4.2 days reported suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Wet, windy conditions early in the week gave way to a warmer, drier pattern toward week's end. Temperatures averaged 1.2 degrees below normal for the state last week, with a high of 101 reported in Milesville. Custer and Porcupine recorded the week's low of 35. The heaviest precipitation occurred in the north central and southeast. Roscoe recorded the highest rainfall total for the week at 1.47 inches.

SOIL CONDITION:    Topsoil moisture conditions decreased slightly from last week's ratings, as moisture amounts were smaller and less widespread. Many areas with adequate topsoil moisture received additional rain last week, leading to a 53 percent adequate to surplus rating for subsoil moisture, up from 47 percent a week earlier. High winds on Monday caused topsoil erosion in some areas. Topsoil crusting from heavy rains in the southeast may impact emerging crops.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Soybean planting, now 85 percent complete, was slowed by rains early in the week, putting planting progress slightly below average. Sixty percent of winter wheat is headed, well ahead of last year and the five-year average. Dry conditions early on in the growing season significantly pushed winter wheat maturity this year. Corn and soybeans remain mostly in good to excellent condition despite some drown-outs and wind-whipped areas. Wet, cool weather put alfalfa harvest behind last year's progress.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Cattle and sheep remain in predominately good to excellent condition. The percentage of range and pasturelands rated good to excellent increased 5 points this week to 36 percent. Pasture and rangelands across the central and west remain in below average condition. Adequate water supplies and grass for livestock are a major concern for these areas.
